Volunteers of the Year
PACE CNY Recognizes the 2018 Volunteers of the Year
Allen is a dynamic part of the volunteer program at PACE CNY’s Sally Coyne location. He began 2 years ago by sharing the headlines in the day center and his role has gradually grown to encompass not only programming, but a relational connection with participants as well. He comes twice a week and shares the headlines, calls bingo, runs a Men’s Club, and visits with every person in the day center on the days that he is there. He had to spend some time away for personal reasons this past year, and participants were continually asking when he was going to come back. Allen is truly a boon to participants and the Therapeutic Recreation department at PACE CNY.
Zoraida Kimpel is a volunteer at Pace 1 & 2. She started at P2 and she was asked to visit with a woman at P1 who wanted to speak Spanish. She was not striving at the day center and did not wish to attend anymore. A joy of hers was to speak in her native tongue Spanish with someone. Zoraida accepted the challenge and she does weekly home visits in Baldwinsville! The participant is so appreciative that she has this opportunity to speak in her native tongue. The participant is able to speak fluent English as well but she was missing that one element in her life to make her happy. She comes to P2 on the other days and works with some of our frail and/or dementia elderly. You can see Zoraida’s kind heart as she helps them through their day. She is assigned participates but if there are others at the table or not even she is always there for them. Zoraida helps them through their daily schedule for the day whether it is encouraging them to participate in activities, helping set up for activities or sitting and conversing with them. The smiles on their faces shows how she makes them feel and that everything is going to be all right. This tells the story of how she is loved by the participants. Zoraida also help set up for programs, if her participants or any others around her need something she will go to staff and continue to advocate for them. You can see the compassion that she has for the participants at Pace. She is not afraid to ask questions, to be educated on topics/issues, and to welcome new participants to Pace.
